Q&A with Charlotte Beecham

K45: We read that you studied in Paris, what did you study and how long were you there?
CB: Yes! I spent my freshman year of college in Paris. I studied Literature and Art but fell in love with fashion and pastry instead!

K45: How does Paris inspire you? What is it about Paris that gave you the incentive on starting your brand?
CB: The women in Paris are beautiful! I was inspired daily by the effortless style of Parisian women and their ability to build an outfit around a single accessory. One day my head turned on the streets of Paris when I saw a beautifully lady all in black wearing a huge statement scarf. It was in that moment that I realized I wanted to reinvent the everyday scarf, an accessory I felt was still left untapped!
Seeing a gap in the market I designed the ‘Popsicle’ and the rest is history!

K45: Tell us about the ‘Popsicle’!
CB: The Popsicle was the first scarf I designed and made in the garment district of New York. I was only a student at NYU when I started so wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing but the reaction to my fun and fluffy design was incredible!
Celebrities including Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung, Rita Ora and Kendall Jenner have all worn a Popsicle, it has become a Charlotte Simone signature and is included in every season to date!

K45: Whether it be form or function, what do you love most about a scarf?
CB: For me the scarf is a statement piece which can enhance any outfit. Living in London a scarf is always functional but I like to have fun with my fashion and always make accessories a welcome addition to my outfit.

K45: For your latest collection, you took segments of your past and put it forward. What specific memories inspired you and how did you translate that into your FW18 creations?
CB: This Winter, I was feeling nostalgic, my collection is inspired by the pretty pastel colours of my grandmother’s house. This season is certainly an ode to the girly girl, showcasing a variety of pastel shades across signature scarfs, hats, bags, charms and jackets. The Charlotte Simone girl is always on the go and effortlessly chic from day to night – her accessories enhance her everyday basics. With this in mind, I looked to design more versatile silhouettes and introduce new shapes and sizes.

K45: You’ve introduced new styles, can you tell us about them and what you love about it?
CB: Another favourite scarf is the ‘Bandit’ in black. It’s easy to pair with an oversized sweater or tucked in a trench coat for warmth.
I also love it in the khaki… I would wear it with our fluffy khaki helmet hat in tow! A faux fur hug of a hat!

K45: What would you suggest to someone who wants to introduce a new style into their wardrobe?
CB: Colour is key! Invest in a Charlotte Simone to add a bolt of bright to your everyday basics.

K45: What is your favourite way to wear your scarves?
CB: For me, my personal style is very relaxed and enhanced with my accessories. I love a jean and trainer but then dress up my look with jewellery and a scarf. I say let your accessories do the taking, so I wear what I’m most comfortable in but then add a pop of colour with a Charlotte Simone scarf.
